Pioneering Portable Performance Since 2007

Inflatable boats from Takacat are light, foldable, fast and robust

Takacat was founded in 2007 by Greg Sowden on the shores of Takapuna, Auckland (NZ). Driven by a lifelong passion for the water and frustration with traditional inflatable boats, Sowden set out to create something better: a truly portable, stable, and versatile catamaran tender. What began as an innovative idea in a New Zealand garage has grown into a globally recognised brand synonymous with smart design and real-world performance.

The early Takacat models introduced a revolutionary Tube-Transom® system, allowing the entire boat — including the transom — to be fully dismantled and packed into two compact carry bags. This addressed key pain points of traditional RIBs and inflatables: weight, storage, and transport. Built with durable 5-ply PVC or Hypalon and refined through extensive prototype testing in New Zealand waters, the designs quickly proved their worth in local conditions, from calm harbours to choppy coastal waters.

Over the years, our Takacat designs have evolved significantly. From the original Freedom & Explorer range to today’s advanced GO, Sport, LS, and LX Series (including popular models like the T340LX, T380S, and T460LX), the boats have become lighter, more stable, and better performing. Key innovations include open transom designs for self-bailing, raised floors, aerodynamic tapered bows, and enhanced modularity for fishing, yacht tender duties, family adventures, and more. Every model remains ISO 6185 & CE certified and engineered for safety, speed, and ease of use with minimal horsepower.

Proudly designed and developed in New Zealand, Takacat boats are now sold globally through a co-op of Takacat Distributors, reaching customers in Europe, North America, Australia, Asia, and beyond. Their unique combination of catamaran stability, lightweight portability, and rugged construction has resonated worldwide. To date, more than 16,000 Takacat models have been sold, earning a reputation as one of the most trusted inflatable boat brands.

Today, Takacat continues to innovate from its base in Albany, Auckland (NZ) blending Kiwi ingenuity with international demand. Whether for recreational boaters, fishers, or yacht owners, Takacat delivers the ultimate portable watercraft — stable, fun, and built to last.
